ABSTRACT

Schisandrae has a long history of medicinal use in China. Domestic and foreign scholars have isolated a variety of chemical constituents from Schisandrae Sphenantherae Fructus and Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, including lignans, volatile oils, polysaccharides, triterpenoids, organic acids, amino acids and so on. Pharmacological studies have shown that their alcohol extracts, water extracts, lignan monomers and polysaccharides could protect liver injury and reduce enzyme ability by a variety of hepatoprotective effects such as enzyme reducing, liver protecting, and antioxidant effect. In this paper, the researches on the chemical composition, hepatoprotective effect and pharmacokinetics of Schisandrae Sphenantherae Fructus and Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus in the past forty years were systematically collated, in order to provide useful enlightenment for the clinical application and new drug development of Schisandrae Sphenantherae Fructus and Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus in liver protection.

ABSTRACT

The raw and processed roots of Plygonum multiflorum Thunb (PM) are used to treat different diseases in clinical practice. In order to clarify the influence of processing, a comparative study of chemical substance analysis was carried out. As the xenobiotics with a high enough exposure in target organs being considered as the potential effective or toxicity components, an in vivo study was also implemented to characterize the constitutes and metabolites, and meanwhile, the factor of compatibility with black bean were also considered. As a result, a total of 148 compounds were detected in PM extracts and more than 40 compounds were only detected in the processed products, which were probably new components produced during the steaming process. In in vivo study, 7 prototype components and 66 metabolites were detected or tentatively identified, 24 of which were reported for the first time. Our results indicated that processing greatly changed the chemical composition of PM and influenced the disposition of the compounds in vivo. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first global comparative study of raw and processed PM. These results expanded our knowledge about the influence of processing of PM and provided the essential data for further efficacy or toxicity studies.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effect of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene polymorphism on brain volume in healthy young adults. Methods One hundred and ninety-three healthy young volunteers (age:20-40 years) were recruited in Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University between August 2013 and May 2014.Two milliliters of peripheral blood were collected for the determination of ApoE genotype using direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products.Brain MRI scans were performed using three-dimensional T1-weighted turbo field echo imaging sequence. The diffcrences of brain morphometry between the ε4 carriers group (ε3/ε4 and ε4/ε4 genotype) and the ε4 non-carriers group (ε3/ε3 genotype) were analyzed using voxel based morphometry (VBM).Results The ε4 carriers accounted for 14.51% (28/193) of the total population.Twenty of ε4 carriers and 45 of ε4 non-carriers were included in the final images analysis.VBM analysis showed that the ApoE ε4 carriers had 10 atrophic brain areas compared with the ε4 non-carriers (P < 0.005,uncorrected,10 continuous voxels),which mainly located in the right anterior cingulate, the bilateral caudates, parietal lobes and lateral temporal lobes. Conclusions The influence of ApoE gene polymorphisms on brain volume has appeared in the youth. The ε4 gene is related to the reductions of the gray matter volume in multiple brain areas.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the impact of TNM staging and combined treatment mode on the survival of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

METHODSFrom January 1997 to December 2002, 987 NSCLC patients were surgically treated in this hospital. Of those, 574 received combined modality therapy (surgery + chemotherapy/radiotherapy), while 413 underwent operation alone. Their clinicopathological data were retrospectively analyzed.

RESULTSThe 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year overall survival rates were 87.7%, 57.5%, 54.6% and 54.5%, respectively, for the whole group, which were 90.6%, 57.5%, 54.3% and 54.1% for the combined therapy group versus 83.8%, 57.6%, 55.2% and 55.2% for the group treated by surgical resection alone. The 1-year survival rate of the combined therapy group was significantly higher than that of the surgical resection alone group (90.6% vs. 83.8%) (P<0.01). With regard to the T factor, 5-year survival rate of the combined therapy group (surgery + radiotherapy) was higher than that of surgery alone group, especially in T4 cases (43.6% vs. 12.7%), with a significant difference between them (P<0. 05). As for the N factor, the 1-year survival rate of NO patients in the combined therapy group (surgery + chemotherapy/radiotherapy) was significantly higher than that of surgery alone group (94.4%, 97.9% vs. 90.0%) (P<0.05). The 1-year survival rate of N1 patients in the combined therapy group (surgery + chemotherapy or + chemotherapy and radiotherapy) was 91.7% and 100% versus 82.9% in the surgery alone group (P<0.01); The 1- and 3-year survival rates of N2 patients in the combined modality therapy group (surgery + chemotherapy) were 82.1% and 37.3%, while those of the surgery alone group were 69.4% and 26.5%, respectively, with a significant difference (P<0.05, P<0.01). All the severity of primary tumor, distance of lymph node involvement, and distant tumor metastasis significantly worsen the prognosis of the patients.

CONCLUSIONThe prognosis in NSCLC patients treated with combined modality therapy (surgery + chemotherapy/radiotherapy) is better than that with surgery alone. The larger the original tumor and the farther the lymph node and tumor metastases, the worse the prognosis is for NSCLC patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effect of endoscopic sinus surgery on inverted papilloma of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in 30 cases. Methods 30 patients with inverted papilloma of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses were operated on by endoscopic sinus surgery. Results During a follow-up of 2~3 years, only four cases recurred, Conclusion Endoscopic sinus surgery had advantsges of clear field and little injury, and therefore it was effective for inverted papilloma of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
